What makes a good language learner?

Students learning English as a second language in China tend to seek the easiest way to acquire the language, especially for exam purposes. They would spend thousands of dollars on books and classes hoping these “miracle cures” can help them improve in a short space of time. However, these usually result in rote memory and selective learning of the language which the students will struggle in a real day-to-day scenario. Therefore, it is important for the students and teachers to focus on the internal qualities on how they learn and not just what they learn.

One of the fundamental ideas a student should acquire at the start of the learning process should be “how to be a good language learner”. This provides the necessary background psychology so that the student is well equipped to learn English in a natural and efficient manner.

So, what exactly makes a good language learner? Let’s take a look at the 7 golden criterias:

Someone who is prepared to take risks.

Learning a new language (in this case English) is similar to learning a new skill. There will be many things that the student will be unfamiliar with and every step they take is into the unknown. They must be willing to bypass the fear of the unknown and step outside their comfort zone. By doing this, the students are equipped to face new challenges when learning a new language.

Motivated

Learning English is not an easy task, particularly when English has a completely different cultural background to the student’s mother tongue. It is therefore extremely important to keep a positive mindset as the students will face multiple setbacks during the journey. They must be able to conjure the confidence and overcome the problems on their own accord. Remember, you, yourself is the worst enemy in life.

Looks for patterns

In the world of languages, English is classified as an easy language to learn. The reason behind this is because they are set patterns in how we write and speak, particularly in the grammar and vocabulary realm. Students who are learning English should be willing to seek these patterns as once they have identified them, learning English should then become a smooth immersion process.

Notices

Modeling and repetition are both great ways to learn English. However, if they keep copying the same mistakes time and time again, these errors will become engraved into their language memory which will hinder their learning capacity in the future. Students must therefore notice these mistakes before they become fossilized and correct them as soon as possible.

Takes every opportunity to practice

If we don’t practice it regularly, we will forget. It is fundamental that we have to practice English whenever we have the opportunity. This is especially important for students in China as there isn’t a natural environment for them to practice in. They must utilize every opportunity in and outside of the classroom (e.g. at home, with friends, at the supermarket, etc.) as this provides consistency with their language acquisition aims. Simple methods include verbal repetition of English audios and dictation of passages that the students have read.

Monitors self and others

Similar to noticing errors, students must be perceptive towards their language environment. They must constantly check their own progress to ensure that they have a firm grasp on their language ability and how they could improve on their current standards. Furthermore, students should be willing to adopt the positives of other English learners and understand what negatives might arise when the other students speak and write.

Paraphrases

Students should never stick to one way of expressing an idea or situation. Being able to convey the message in the current context does not mean they will be able to do so when another arises. Students who are learning English should actively seek out multiple lexical resources so that they can respond flexibility depending on the situation and register. In fact, being able to paraphrase naturally demonstrates higher level language abilities which will come in handy in every English language testing system.
