Some people like to plan their free time. Others spend their free time without any plan. Which do you prefer? Explain why.

Sample Answer

I always plan my free time carefully. I think it’s more and more difficult to have any free time nowadays, since every day we are busy with our work, study or family duties. So whenever we get the chance to spend a few days’ leisure time, we should cherish such time by making good use of it, which means to plan it in the first place. Take myself as an example. I have just finished a 7 day long holiday, which is an important traditional Chinese holiday during which time you are supposed to visit every one of your close family members. To me it’s like a mission impossible because I have a very big family. But with careful planning, I finally managed to visit every one of them by the end of the holiday!

Talk about a way that helps you to relax. Explain why this helps you to relax.

Sample Answer

As high school (college) students, we have lot of homework and assignments, so we have to read a lot and we are under tremendous pressure. Whenever I have time, I would like to watch movie with my friends, such as action movies and it offers me an outlet to let go of my negative emotions. My parents are both working parents, and they really have busy work schedule. So we don’t spend a lot of time together. Therefore, I would like to spend some time watching movies with my parents which will be a great way to get connected with my parents. And after the movie, we can also go to the restaurant.

What will you do when you need to find an answer to a question: to ask a teacher, to search the Internet, or to read a book?

Sample Answer

When I need to find an answer to a question, I prefer to search the Internet. I think this is the fastest and the most reliable way to get an answer. First, because I carry a smart phone with me every day, I can get access to the Internet almost any time I want. To me, getting an answer is as simple as putting in a key word in the search box. Often you’ll find that there are already many people asking the same questions, and the answers to these questions are often ranked in an order of relevance or readers’ ratings, which make them much more trustworthy. By contrast, a teacher is not always around when you need to ask them a question. And as to the book, well, you have to be very lucky to find the exact piece of information from hundreds of pages. It’s just too time-consuming.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Power and money is the symbol of success.

Sample Answer

I disagree with this. Of course, it can be very nice to have power and money. Some people out there have the whole package: power, money, family, good health, and so on. They could definitely be called successful in their life. But to aim for only power and money seems kind of shortsighted. I’ve known too many cold, shallow people who have a good job and are quite wealthy, but shut out others and don’t even seem to enjoy themselves. They become selfish and strange and still oddly unsatisfied. Meanwhile, there are many people who may not be rich, but they make the best out of everything. They find joy in their loved ones and hobbies. When they do have money to spare, they appreciate it. They’re happy, and I think that’s what true success is.

Do you prefer to learn from current people and events or from people and events in the past?

Sample Answer

I prefer to learn from people and events in the past. I feel like, when events are current, we sometimes can't properly understand them. We're just living them, day-to-day, perhaps without seeing the big picture. We can't see the forest for the trees, as the saying goes. There needs to be that distance of time in order to have proper comprehension. It is only then that the themes and patterns emerge and we can learn what sorts of things work and what sorts of things are harmful, or what is right and what is wrong. I would feel much more confident proclaiming something from twenty years ago as wise o r a brilliant idea over something contemporary, where I'm still not even sure what all of its results and ramifications will be.
